Fungi cause excessive production of keratin under the nail plate. This makes the nail increasingly thicker and harder. This thickening makes the nail difficult to trim and can lead to pressure and pain, especially in shoes. This is a typical characteristic of advanced fungal infections.
In a fungal infection, fungi penetrate the nail plate and cause discoloration. The nail becomes yellow, brown, white, or sometimes greenish due to fungal growth and accumulation of keratin material under the nail. This discoloration usually starts at the edge or tip of the nail and gradually spreads towards the nail root.
The fungus breaks down the structure of the nail, causing it to lose its firmness. The nail becomes porous and brittle, with pieces easily breaking off or crumbling. A dry, powdery material often forms under the nail. This crumbling indicates severe damage to the nail structure by the fungus.
The fungal infection disrupts normal nail growth. As a result, the nail grows irregularly, deformed, or growth almost completely stops. A healthy nail grows about 3 mm per month, but with a fungal infection, this process can be severely delayed or disturbed.
