Are you considering a filler treatment or would you like to know more about what fillers actually do? In this blog, we explain step-by-step how fillers work and how they differ from botox.

What is the difference between fillers and botox?

Fillers and botox are often confused. Both can be injected in a cosmetic clinic, but they are two completely different products with different effects. While Botulinum toxin (botox) temporarily relaxes the muscles, causing wrinkles, lines, and frown lines to fade, a filler temporarily fills a groove, fold, or wrinkle.

What are fillers?

In this blog, we delve deeper into fillers. As mentioned, fillers fill something, but the question now is with what substance is something filled? In the past, permanent fillers and also silicones were used. These fillers would, for example, fill a wrinkle or add volume to a specific area. Permanent fillers, however, cannot be corrected or dissolved. At the time, their long-term effects were also unknown. Unfortunately, many complications arose from permanent fillers, such as inflammation and foreign body reactions, leading to, for example, disfigured faces. Today, permanent fillers are therefore prohibited in the Netherlands.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Nowadays, temporary fillers are used. These fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, a transparent, body-identical gel. At The Body Clinic, we only work with A-brand hyaluronic acids, such as Restylane, Teosyal, or Saypha. Tens of millions of treatments have already been performed with these hyaluronic acids, and their long-term safety has also been proven. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body itself and has a hydrating and collagen-stimulating effect on the skin. Due to natural aging, the amount of hyaluronic acid and thus the volume of the skin decreases. How quickly this happens depends on lifestyle, wear and tear, and heredity, among other factors.

Fillers based on hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be used when one wants to fill wrinkles. A wrinkle that has become deep over time can be effectively filled with fillers. The fine wrinkles around your mouth are also easily treatable. A popular treatment with fillers is also under-eye bags. In fact, almost all wrinkles on your face are suitable for treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers. After a consultation, the doctor will decide with you which brand suits you best to achieve the desired result. Each brand has unique properties, making it best suited for use in a specific area.

Which areas can you use a filler for?

Besides filling wrinkles, a hyaluronic acid-based filler is also suitable for contour restoration and improvement. Due to the natural aging process that we all face, fat reserves and supporting tissue in the face decrease. This results in volume loss. In your younger years, you might have had fuller and firmer cheeks. The temples can also sink in, making your forehead appear narrower. By filling the contours at the top of the face, you restore the V-shape in the face, which radiates youthfulness. Of course, there are also other areas suitable for contour restoration, such as the cheekbones, nasolabial folds, mouth corner folds, and jawline.

Lip fillers and nose correction

You are not only eligible for fillers at an older age. Younger people sometimes want more volume in certain areas of the face. For example, if you desire fuller lips than those you were born with, lip fillers offer the perfect solution. Less well-known is that fillers are also suitable for a so-called ‘liquid’ nose correction. If you have a bump on your nose, this can be corrected with a filler. You don't have to undergo surgery. You don't need months of recovery time, and the result is immediately visible.

Filler treatment consultation

Before a filler treatment, photos will be taken of you. Afterwards, the area to be treated will be numbed with a cream. The doctor at The Body Clinic will discuss your wishes with you and analyze the possibilities to achieve the desired result. What you have in mind is not always possible or always the best solution. It is therefore very important that you always have a consultation with one of our experienced doctors before a treatment.

Before a filler treatment

Before the filler treatment, we recommend taking 1x 10mg Cetirizine to counteract swelling. To prevent bruising, we advise you to take Arnica drops from 5 days before until two days after the treatment. If you use food supplements, vitamins, and/or fish oil, we advise you to stop taking them 5 days before the treatment. Alcohol does not have a positive effect on the treatment, and it is therefore important not to consume alcohol from 48 hours before the treatment. Finally, we advise you not to use blood-thinning medication such as Aspirin, Naproxen, and Ibuprofen before the treatment (paracetamol is allowed). If necessary, you should discuss this with your prescribing doctor.

After a filler treatment

After the treatment, the treated area may be somewhat swollen, red, and/or bruised. In our clinic, you can immediately start cooling. We recommend maintaining this for 10-30 minutes. We advise against exercising after the treatment, as well as applying makeup. Avoid contact with the injected skin and prevent sun exposure to the treated area. Use at least SPF 30. We also advise you not to use a tanning bed and not to undergo facial treatments such as peels, lasers, and microdermabrasion for at least two weeks. Give your skin time to recover. Two weeks after the treatment, you will return for a check-up. If you are completely satisfied, this is not necessary. If you have doubts about the result, you are, of course, welcome to discuss this with our doctor.

Result of a filler treatment

The result of hyaluronic acid-based fillers lasts approximately 12 months. The final result is visible after two weeks. How long a filler actually lasts depends on the individual. Some break down hyaluronic acid faster than others. It is therefore difficult to specify exactly how long a filler maintains the desired result.

Filler Safety

Should you not be satisfied with the result, it is good to know that the fillers we use at The Body Clinic are dissolvable and temporary. We absolutely do not use permanent fillers in our clinic in Amsterdam and Duiven.

Filler Prices

The prices depend on the indication and the amount in ml. [Here] you will find the pricelist for the current prices per area.
