What is a chemical peel?
A peel is a treatment to improve the appearance and skin texture of the face and/or neck. During a peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which exfoliates the skin. This causes renewal of skin cells resulting in smooth, radiant skin. Peelings can help with a variety of skin conditions. Our peels are suitable for virtually all skin types and all ages. Which peel is right for you will be discussed in detail during a consultation with our skin therapist.

Skin indications for a chemical peel
Peeling against acne and pimples + deep cleansing
An acne peel helps reduce pimples and inflammation. Acne is caused by the overproduction of sebum in the skin, among other things. Excess sebum clogs pores, which can result in inflammation and pimples. Peelings are an effective treatment for acne. They address multiple causes simultaneously.
Peelings remove dead skin cells, which helps keep pores open. This reduces the risk of blockages and inflammation. In addition, the antibacterial action of peels also helps prevent acne. Exfoliations also stimulate skin renewal, which helps repair the skin. The skin becomes stronger and more resistant to new acne outbreaks. During this treatment, clogged pores are also cleaned.

Peeling against dull skin
An exfoliation against dull skin restores a glowing and vibrant appearance. Dull skin lacks radiance, due to insufficient hydration and vitality. This can be due to age, stress or pollution of the skin. In addition, the accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin can contribute to a dull appearance of the skin. Peelings can be a good solution to dull skin.
First, exfoliators remove dead skin cells, revealing the underlying, healthier layer of skin. Peelings also stimulate the production of new skin cells, which replace old, dull skin. The combination of skin renewal and stimulating collagen production creates a natural glow. In addition, the boost in collagen production also helps improve the texture and appearance of the skin. The peel has an exfoliating effect, which improves the absorption of moisturizing products into the skin. Thus, the skin is better hydrated and looks healthier and more youthful.

Peeling against pigmentation spots
Pigment spots are caused by uneven melanin production. Sunlight, age and hormones are often the cause of this. Genetic factors and damages, such as scars, can also cause pigmentation spots. Peelings are effective against pigmentation spots. They can reduce the visibility of these spots.
The exfoliating effect of the peel removes the top layer of skin. Herein are often the most pigmented skin cells. This makes pigment spots less visible. Peelings also stimulate cell renewal. New, less pigmented skin cells replace the old ones. The production of excess pigment is inhibited, preventing the formation of new pigment spots. The peel contains active ingredients that have a brightening effect on pigmentation spots.

Duration: | 45 minutes |
Safety: | Safe for all skin types |
Recovery: | Redness on the day and scaling for 3-7 days |

Peeling against fine lines
Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of skin aging. Smoking, dehydration and exposure to lots of sunlight accelerate this process. As one ages, the skin’s production of collagen decreases. The skin loses its volume and resilience, creating fine lines and wrinkles in the skin. Peelings can reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
A peel removes the top layer of skin, this stimulates the production of new skin cells. As a result, the skin becomes smoother and tighter. In addition to the production of new skin cells, collagen production is also stimulated. These are proteins that are essential for firm skin. As the skin is encouraged to produce new skin cells and collagen, wrinkles and fine lines are reduced. Several peels are available within this category; they vary in intensity. During the consultation, the skin therapist will discuss which peel is appropriate.

Peeling against redness
Redness of the skin can have several causes. Sensitivity, inflammation and skin conditions are common. External factors such as temperature fluctuations and irritants also play a role. When the skin is hypersensitive to something, it can cause redness. Peelings can help reduce redness.
Peelings remove dead skin cells and soothe the skin. This can cause inflammation to decrease. Specific peels are designed for sensitive skin that contain milder ingredients. This does not irritate the skin but can be treated. Peelings can improve the skin barrier, meaning outside influences have less effect on your skin. This helps prevent future redness. Peelings also stimulate cell renewal, making skin more resistant to irritation.

Duration: | 30 minutes |
Safety: | Safe for all skin types |
Recovery: | Mild redness on the day |
Ingredients: | Mandelic acid, azelaic acid |

Types of peelings
The Body Clinic offers a range of different types of peels. Which peel is right for you will be considered with you in a no-obligation consultation. Some of the most popular types of peels are listed below.
-
TCA Peeling
A TCA peel is a chemical peel containing the active ingredient Trichloroacetic acid. This peel is known as one of the most effective peels for various skin indications. TCA peels reduce skin dullness, fine lines, dehydrated skin, residual acne, and coarse pores. TCA penetrates deeper into the skin than other acids, stimulating collagen production. This combined with the exfoliating action results in a fresher, younger looking skin.
-
AHA Peeling
AHA peels, short for Alpha Hydroxy Acids, are peels based on fruit acids. The best-known AHAs are glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). The action of AHA peels is mainly focused on the skin surface. They help remove dead skin cells, resulting in smooth and radiant skin. AHA peels also help moisturize the skin and can address various skin problems.

BHA Peeling
BHA, such as salicylic acid, is perfect for oily, acne-prone skin. It cleanses pores and removes excess sebum. BHA peels have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing redness and inflammation. Cell renewal is stimulated, resulting in fresh, clear skin. BHA peels are also less irritating than other peels, making them suitable for sensitive skin.

What to do before and after a chemical peel?
Before undergoing a peel at The Body Clinic, a consultation with our skin therapist always takes place first. It is strongly advised not to use tretinoin or retinol for at least two days before the peel. Two weeks before the treatment, you will begin treating your skin with home products. Before treatment, also avoid skin irritation and/or intentional tanning of the skin. Using a cream with at least SPF 30 is recommended if you are outside during the day. On the day of the treatment itself, it is important that you come to the clinic without makeup, cream, lotion or perfume on.
After treatment, it is important to avoid humid areas, heat and exercise for one to five days. Also, do not use active ingredients until a few days after treatment. The skin should only be cared for with a mild cleanser, moisturizer and an SPF product with at least factor 30. Also, do not touch the peeling after the treatment, as this may cause scarring.
The recovery process of a peel varies from one peel to another. What matters then is how deep into the skin the peel is effective. With a superficial peel, you may experience mild redness for a few days after treatment. In the case of a deep peel, redness may persist for up to 7 days and flaking of the skin may occur. During the consultation, our skin therapist will inform you of the recovery time of the peel you are interested in.
The result of a superficial peel treatment plan remains visible for about 3 months. The result of a peel treatment plan that treats deeper into the skin is visible for up to about 6 months.

Safety of a chemical peel
When you undergo a chemical peel, you first begin by preparing the skin. You prepare the skin with home products that contain a low concentration of the active ingredient. Thus, the skin is gradually introduced to the active acids. With an active cold sore, exfoliation is not possible. This increases the chances of the cold sore spreading. If a cold sore develops in the week following treatment, contact your skin therapist. Our skin therapist will work with you to assess your skin quality. The options and your needs are identified to put together a treatment plan.
