Eyelid correction

Types of eyelid corrections (upper and lower)

If you are considering an eyelid correction, or what is known to surgeons as “blepharoplasty”, you are right at home with us at The Body Clinic. Sagging, droopy lids and bags under the eyes can make a person look tired. Sagging lids usually come with age, but genes may also play a part. If you want to reclaim that bright, lively appearance, then eyelid surgery may be just the procedure for you. We offer upper and lower lid corrections or a combination of both. Eyelid surgery is a relatively small operation but it can deliver great results. In some cases it has even been known to lessen chronic headaches.

Which eyelid correction surgery should I get?

If you are suffering from droopy lids (ptosis) you may consider an upper eyelid correction. During an upper lid correction, we remove excess skin from above the eye by means of a small incision in the lid fold. If you happen to be suffering from bags under your eyes, we recommend lower lid surgery. This involves a small incision in the lash line underneath your eye. It is possible that you have both sagging eyelids and bags under your eyes. In that case, you may consider a combination of upper and lower eyelid surgery. One of our doctors will happily point you in the right direction during a non-committal consultation session.

Before and after the treatment

Before the treatment

– We ask you to arrive minimally 30 minutes in advance of your upper eyelid procedure.
– To prevent bruising: Do not use dietary supplements, vitamins or fish oil capsules in the five days leading up to your treatment. Also, refrain from drinking alcohol for 48 hours before treatment.
– In addition, we recommend you shy away from Aspirin, Naproxen and Ibuprofen, as these have a blood-thinning effect. Consult your doctor if you need these.
– Arnica drops may be taken from five days before treatment until two days after.
– Please avoid smoking for seven days prior to your treatment. Smoking and second-hand smoke can negatively affect your recovery. Smoking prior to your operation can lead to complications.

After the treatment

To prevent bruising and swelling post-treatment we offer direct cooling at our clinic. Regular cooling and plenty of rest boosts your recovery time. We recommend cooling your eyelids for five to ten minutes every hour. The first few days after your operation your eyes will appear blue and swollen. You can start engaging in light activities, but we recommend avoiding physical activities such as heavy lifting and exercise for the first few weeks. This will markedly improve your recovery. Upper eyelid corrections usually do not come with a lot of after-pain. Should you suffer from after-pain nonetheless, we recommend paracetamol/Panadol. Please refrain from consuming alcohol during your recovery period, as this will negatively affect your recovery. We also recommend you wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes against sunlight, harsh wind or dust particles. We will schedule a check-up appointment one week after your procedure to remove your sutures and patches. Most of the swelling will have subsided after the first week and you will look presentable again.

Recovery time

Most patients recover within seven to ten days, meaning no swelling or bruising is expected after this. Your scars will remain red for a while, but this will fade over time.

Effect duration

You will notice the full effects of your upper eyelid correction in approximately three to six months. These results tend to persist for 15 years. By employing a good skin care regimen and living healthily you can maximise the benefits of your upper eyelid correction.

Free intake

Before your eyelids may be treated, you’ll need to make an intake appointment with one of our doctors, to verify if you qualify for this type of treatment. During this intake, one of our doctors will map out your health and discuss possible alternatives with you. We will also take photographs of the treatment area. We will discuss pre- and post-treatment regimes with you and any side effects or risks that might come with the treatment.

Safety

Eyelid corrections surgery are very safe. Our doctors have years of experience and only use the safest substances and materials for this procedure. An upper and lower eyelid correction is a fairly simple operation with a low risk of complications. Keep in mind that every type of operation bears its own risks, but they are minimal in the case of an upper and lower eyelid correction.

FAQ

How much does an eyelid correction cost?

The cost of an eyelid correction depends on the type of treatment you choose. For upper eyelid corrections we charge 895,- euros and for lower eyelid corrections we charge 1.100,-  euros.

Does my health insurance cover eyelid corrections?

Eyelid corrections are cosmetic procedures and therefore unlikely to be covered by your health insurance. However, in rare cases your insurance may cover an eyelid correction on medical grounds. In these cases, one of the important criteria is that the upper eyelid fold must cover a substantial part of your pupil when you look straight ahead. If you meet the medical criteria, this procedure will be covered by your basic insurance and you will not require supplementary insurance.

Do I have to be sedated during my eyelid correction?

During eyelid surgery, you receive a local anaesthetic injection whereby the area around the eyes is numbed so you will experience no pain during your eyelid correction.

Do I have to stay at the clinic overnight?

There is no need to stay overnight with an eyelid correction. It is a quick procedure. A client is usually discharged within half an hour. Please note that you should not travel home alone but have someone escort you.

Are eyelid corrections painful?

You will receive a local anaesthetic prior to your treatment, so you will feel nothing during the procedure. You might experience some pain after the procedure. This discomfort or pain is nothing that a paracetamol/Panadol does not fix.

Do eyelid corrections leave scars?

Every surgical procedure will leave some kind of scar and this is also the case for upper and lower lid surgery. Please rest assured that our experienced doctors will do anything to minimize scar formation. After your treatment, your scars will be red for a couple of months but this will fade with time until the scars are barely visible.
