Go to overview

You may have seen the term 'Ozempic face' circulating on social media.

Hollywood stars such as Ashley Benson and John Goodman have experienced it, and many others alongside them. In this blog, you can read what Ozempic face is, what causes it, and how it can be remedied.

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a medication containing the active substance semaglutide and is primarily prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonists, a group of hormones that ensure blood sugar levels are maintained when the body is unable to do so itself. In addition to regulating blood sugar, Ozempic also has an effect on reducing appetite. Therefore, it leads to weight loss in many users. This weight loss is one of the reasons why Ozempic is also used off-label for medical weight loss and combating obesity. Because several well-known individuals have used the medication for this reason, its popularity has grown significantly.

What is Ozempic face?

Ozempic face is a phenomenon that becomes visible when people lose a lot of weight in a short period. The fat in the face provides support for the skin, keeping it voluminous and taut. When fat decreases rapidly, it can appear as if there is excess skin. The cheeks sink inward, lines and wrinkles become more visible, and the jawline sags. People with Ozempic face often have hollowed-out cheeks and increased definition of under-eye bags. This results in a tired, aged appearance.

Does Ozempic accelerate facial aging?

To briefly answer the question of whether Ozempic accelerates facial aging; no, it does not. Ozempic itself does not directly accelerate the aging of the face, but the associated weight loss can indeed lead to an aged appearance. This is because rapid fat loss in the face can cause skin laxity and loss of volume, making wrinkles and fine lines more visible. The fat in the face acts as a kind of filler that keeps the skin firm and youthful. When this fat disappears quickly, the skin can sag and the face can look older.

Solutions for Ozempic face

If you suffer from sagging skin in the face, fortunately, there are several treatments to add volume and/or tighten the skin:

Fillers are used to restore volume loss in the face and to correct wrinkles, folds, or contour changes. They typically consist of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that helps to plump and hydrate the skin from within. The Sculptra treatment stimulates collagen production to a much greater extent than Radiesse, but is only visible after several months. Unlike Radiesse, Sculptra does not serve as a 'filler'. Morpheus8 is the only one of the three that is not an injectable. It is a treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency. Microneedling stimulates the production of collagen and elastin by initiating the natural healing process. The heat from the radiofrequency causes collagen fibers to contract and tighten the skin.
