What are smoker's lines?
Smoker's lines primarily occur in people who smoke, but you can also develop them if you have never smoked. It is well known that smoking is not beneficial for the condition of the skin. The constant contraction of the mouth muscles when inhaling a cigarette causes wrinkles around the mouth. That is why these are also colloquially called smoker's lines or 'pleated skirt'.
What can you do about smoker's lines?
Fillers are effective in treating wrinkles around the mouth. If there is significant volume loss around the mouth, we recommend a filler treatment. However, if there is little to no volume loss, a Botox treatment can be an option. Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes the muscles around your mouth, which can reduce wrinkles and lines. A combination of fillers and Botox is also an option.
What causes these lines?
Vertical wrinkles above the lips have various causes. Smoking is certainly one of them, but exposure to ultraviolet light, facial expressions (such as pursing the lips), heredity, and age also play a role.
The treatment
Smoker's lines typically run from the nose to the lip and can make your face appear older. By undergoing a filler treatment for smoker's lines at The Body Clinic, the lines above your lip will be less visible for approximately one year. After just one treatment, you will see immediate results and have a younger appearance. You can never start too early with treating smoker's lines. If the lines have been present for a long time, small scars can form. These small scars make wrinkles more difficult to remove.
Before the treatment
We ask you to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment so that you can complete a medical questionnaire and we can take photos for your file at The Body Clinic. We then apply an anesthetic cream (Emla) to the wrinkles above the lip. After it has taken effect, the treatment begins. Of course, the doctor will first discuss your wishes and the possibilities to fulfill them. The hyaluronic acid filler is injected into the skin using a needle.
After the smoker's lines treatment
After the treatment, the area around the mouth may be slightly swollen. Some bruising may also occur. We advise you to cool the treated areas at our clinic after the treatment. We will provide you with ice packs. The hyaluronic acid fillers we use have a visible result for approximately 12 months.
