What happens if I stop using fillers

Stoppen met fillers: wanneer en waarom een herhaalbehandeling met hyaluronzuur voordelig is bij The Body Clinic

Can I stop using fillers?

Stopping fillers is always possible. Once you start a filler treatment, it doesn't mean you have to continue the treatment indefinitely.

Why a repeat treatment?

A repeat treatment is not necessary, but one advantage of a repeat treatment with a Hyaluronic acid filler is its skin-improving effect. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally occurring in the body that provides the skin with natural hydration, resulting in firm and smooth skin. As we age, the supply of Hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, leading to less moisture and thus less volume. By replenishing the declining supply of Hyaluronic acid, the skin attracts moisture again. If you do this regularly, the bio-active effect provides a long-term anti-aging effect.

Are there side effects if I stop filler treatments?

When you stop fillers, your face will not look different because of the filler treatment. However, you might notice a difference compared to before the treatment; this can be attributed to the following causes:

  • Lifestyle

If your lifestyle has deteriorated significantly, this can have a negative effect on your skin's condition. This, of course, has nothing to do with a filler treatment.

  • The natural aging process

From the moment you underwent a filler treatment and from the moment you decide to stop fillers, the natural aging process has simply continued. Therefore, it may seem that by stopping fillers you appear to have aged, whereas this would have happened without fillers as well.

  • Habituation

A filler is typically visible for about twelve months. This is quite a long period. During this period, you have become accustomed to yourself with filler. As soon as you stop fillers, this can lead to the idea that you look different or aged.

  • You have been over-treated with fillers

Injecting an excessive amount of fillers into someone's face stretches the skin. Once the filler dissolves after about twelve months, looser skin remains. Therefore, it is important that you have a treatment performed by an experienced and certified doctor.

Can you stop permanent fillers?

Fillers can be divided into two categories: permanent fillers and non-permanent fillers. The most commonly used fillers are temporary and based on the body's own substance, hyaluronic acid. Permanent fillers, on the other hand, are made from a non-body-native substance, namely silicone. This type of filler is encapsulated by the body because it is a foreign substance. Stopping a permanent filler is virtually impossible, unless it is surgically removed.

Stopping non-permanent fillers is possible

If you have ever been treated with a hyaluronic acid filler, stopping is always possible. You are not forced to repeat a treatment. A hyaluronic acid-based filler generally lasts for 12 months. How long the filler is actually visible depends on:

  • The treatment area

Research has shown that a hyaluronic acid filler in soft tissue, such as the lips, lasts longer than in other areas.

  • Metabolism

A hyaluronic acid filler is absorbed by the body over time. How quickly your body does this depends on how fast your metabolism works.

  • Lifestyle

If you maintain an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking and drinking alcohol, this can lead to the fillers lasting shorter than for someone with a good lifestyle.

Stopping fillers is always possible as long as you have been treated with a temporary filler. Keep in mind beforehand that there will come a time when the filler is completely absorbed by the body and is no longer visible. Furthermore, it is important that you never let yourself be over-treated with fillers, live as healthy as possible, accept the aging process, remember that a filler is temporary, and that you looked different before the treatment. This way, stopping fillers becomes an easier process.

Bart encourages his team to work with small, thoughtful adjustments and to prefer a refined follow-up rather than doing too much at once. In this way, he safeguards natural aesthetics and the preservation of facial expressions as core values within the entire organization. In addition, as director, Bart is closely involved in medical quality, strategic choices, and the further growth of The Body Clinic. His vision on meticulousness, natural results, and realistic aesthetics continues to form the basis of how the clinic operates and grows to this day.
