It's a frequently asked question, especially in summer when everyone spends more time in the sun. The answer is no, the sun cannot make a filler dissolve faster. However, it is important to stay out of the sun for a few days after a filler treatment. We explain why.
The sun does not make a filler dissolve faster
Sun exposure does not make fillers dissolve faster. Fillers are injected under the skin to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. Sun rays do not penetrate deep enough into the skin to dissolve filler particles. Popular fillers like Restylane are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body. The results of a hyaluronic acid filler treatment are often immediately visible.
The body is designed to maintain its core temperature
In the heat of the sun, our body does not suddenly become very hot. Our body is designed to maintain its core temperature. So, it's not the case that the filler 'melts' due to the sun's heat. When we are in the cold, this also has no effect on fillers, as our body temperature is maintained then as well.
Stay out of the sun for a few days after a filler treatment
Give the skin time to recover after a filler treatment. Healing is faster and better when you stay out of the sun. Moreover, a bruise can occur after a filler treatment, and this bruise can turn into a pigment spot. Pigmentation is difficult to treat, which is why I recommend staying out of the sun until the skin has fully recovered.
Wear SPF 50 in the summer
Sun exposure accelerates the skin's aging process and is one of the main causes of wrinkles. The filler gives your skin a boost and counteracts the aging process. It would therefore be counterproductive to then sit extensively in the sun. If you do go into the sun, I advise you to use SPF 50. If you would like a nice tan in the summer, I recommend using self-tanner.
In short, fillers do not dissolve faster in the sun as they are placed deeper in the skin. However, it is strongly recommended to allow the skin to fully recover after a filler treatment to prevent inflammation and pigmentation.
