Are you curious about lip fillers, but afraid of the so-called ‘duck face’? In our clinic, the aim is always to create the most natural-looking lips possible with lip fillers. A natural-looking lip involves factors such as face shape, the amount of filler, and where the lip filler is precisely injected. Creating natural lips requires precision and careful work. I therefore recommend having this treatment performed by an experienced and skilled physician. In this article, I will explain more about this.
Lips are the eye-catcher of the face
Everyone is unique when it comes to lips. Did you know that humans are the only species with outwardly everted and therefore very visible lips? Even great apes have inwardly everted lips. When we look at someone, our first attention goes to their eyes and then to their lips. Our lips are therefore a real eye-catcher. Lip fillers for a feminine, youthful, and sensual appearance Because our lips are everted, they are very clearly visible. Women generally have more pronounced lips than men. According to research by Perrett and colleagues 1998 [1], full lips are a characteristic of a feminine facial appearance. Fuller lips not only provide a feminine look but also a youthful and sensual one. It is therefore not surprising that lip fillers are a very popular treatment in our clinic.
Face shape as a starting point for lip fillers
Now, the question is how much the lips should be filled to achieve the desired, but certainly also a natural result. Your face shape plays a major role in this. As a cosmetic doctor, I look at the proportions of your face to determine how much the lips can be filled to create natural lips that suit your face. Ideally, lips should have a certain proportion. The upper lip should be slightly smaller than the lower lip. I always recommend initially filling the lips according to exact proportions. The lips must, after all, remain in harmony with the face.
A natural lip
Filling lips with lip fillers can be done in various ways. If you desire a natural result, I generally recommend minimally filling the lip border. An overly large lip border can lead to a ‘duck face’. By emphasizing the vermillion border, the lips are slightly enlarged as a whole, resulting in a natural lip. Additionally, in most cases, I recommend not using more than 1ml of filler during a treatment.
What exactly is a filler?
Your lips are filled with a filler, which is a transparent, body-identical gel based on hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that already occurs in our body; this substance decreases in amount as we age. Fillers can be used to fill something, such as wrinkles, but you can also use fillers to add volume, for example in the lips.
Lip volume decreases with aging
As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body decreases. This is also clearly visible in the lips. Our lips become narrower, paler in color, and the border between the lips and the adjacent skin fades. By filling the lips in this situation, you look youthful again.
Free consultation for lip fillers
If you are interested in this treatment, I recommend making an appointment for a free consultation with one of our doctors. During this consultation, you can explain your wishes, and the doctor will indicate what is possible. Our doctors will always strive for a natural result!

Bart Biermans is a cosmetic doctor and founder of The Body Clinic. After studying medicine at Utrecht University, he started one clinic in Amsterdam, which under his leadership has grown into a leading organization with multiple locations in the Netherlands and Germany. With over 20 years of experience in injectables, Bart has developed a clear vision on natural aesthetics, balance, and harmony. Although Bart now only sporadically treats patients, he plays an important role in coaching the doctors within The Body Clinic. He transfers his years of experience by guiding doctors in the same refined working method he developed himself: subtle improvements that suit a person's face, without it being visible that a treatment has taken place. Bart encourages his team to work with small, thoughtful adjustments and to prefer a refined follow-up rather than doing too much at once. In this way, he safeguards natural aesthetics and the preservation of facial expressions as core values within the entire organization. In addition, as director, Bart is closely involved in medical quality, strategic choices, and the further growth of The Body Clinic. His vision on meticulousness, natural results, and realistic aesthetics continues to form the basis of how the clinic operates and grows to this day.
