Frown lines
Regain that smooth, radiant look
Frown lines
Frown lines are the result of the contraction of small muscles between the eyebrows. Not everyone gets frown lines. Genetics are the main factor involved. If at least one of your parents had/has a frown line, chances are this was passed onto the next generation. Other factors activities that cause people to furrow their brow in concentration, causing the formation of lines include driving and computer use. At The Body Clinic we treat frowns with botulinum toxin. However, if a wrinkle is quite deep, we may suggest combining a botulinum toxin treatment with fillers.

Why treat frown lines?
If you look annoyed when you’re not, you may consider having this false impression removed. Or you could have a wrinkle between your eyebrows even when your face is perfectly calm and relaxed. Both situations are likely candidates for successful botulinum toxin treatment. Frowns may be treated for yet another reason: treatment can have a lifting effect on the eyebrows. This is because the muscles of the frown pull the eyebrow down a little. Therefore, as soon as these muscles relax, the eyebrow may lift ever so slightly. In case you want a bigger lift at the eyebrow area, an eyebrow lift may be an option for you.
The treatment
Treating a frown is a true lunchtime treatment. You’re in and out the door in no time and with no downtime on your hands. After pre-treatment photographs and the required filling out of a health and treatment form, it’s treatment time. It only takes five to seven pricks in the muscles. After treatment, you briefly apply a little pressure on the treated area. Cooling is not necessary.

Natural result
Due to the considerable media attention, the word ‘Botox’ often conjures up images of unmoving, expressionless faces to a lot of people. To avoid sustaining an unnatural expression, it is vital you let your Botulinum toxin treatment be carried out at a recognised clinic. This is why our doctors at The Body Clinic take your specific wishes and your natural facial features into account. When in doubt, the doctors of The Body Clinic would rather treat one area as opposed to multiple, so as to let you acclimatise to the effect. ‘Less is more’ is our creed.
Before and after
Before and after treatment
Before we can begin the Botulinum toxin treatment, the area around your frown is disinfected and the injection sites are marked.
It is important that you do not lie down for two hours after your Botulinum toxin treatment. You are also advised to not exercise – this includes yoga – immediately following treatment. Neither should you massage the treated area. It is recommended to regularly flex the treated muscle. So if your frown was treated, you should practice looking angry.
In nearly all cases, nothing at the treated area will give away the fact that you have had work done on your face. In some rare cases, redness of the skin, swelling or bruising may occur.
Initially, you will be able to enjoy your Botulinum toxin treatment for three to four months. Should you visit us more often, this period will gradually increase to five to six months on average. Everyone’s body is different and so are the results.
Free intake
The Body Clinic offers free, no obligation consultations with one of our physicians prior to any treatment or treatments you may express interest in. We use our intakes to consider possible medical objections to desired treatments, map out treatment areas and offer personalised advice in line with your preferences and options.

Safety
Botulinum toxin is an especially safe substance. Because Botulinum toxin is subject to pharmaceutical law, researchers have spent years studying its effectiveness, side effects and complications before it was allowed to be marketed. Botulinum toxin has now been used in the medical world for over forty years (in higher doses) in countless patients, among whom children and adults suffering from muscle spasms. No negative long-term effects have ever been reported about Botulinum toxin.

FAQ
I don't have a frown wrinkle yet but people say I look angry a lot. Can you treat that too?
Certainly! It’s possible to treat a frown muscle even if it has no wrinkles yet. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscle responsible for contracting the skin into a frown. Your angry look will disappear and you will get a beautiful, open and relaxed look.
Is it possible that my eyebrows will droop after an anti-frown treatment with Botulinum toxin?
With the correct injection of Botox, there is no reason to fear that your eyebrows will droop. On the contrary. The frown muscles pull the brow down a little. When these muscles are frozen temporarily, some will see a lifting effect.
Will I look unnatural if I can't frown?
It’s true that the face changes a little when the frown has been treated. But this hardly ever looks unnatural to anyone. It’s the frown wrinkle that makes a face look serious, surly or fatigued. The effect of Botulinum toxin is a softer and less tired expression. Everyone sees this as positive.
After the Botulinum toxin wears off, doesn't the frown wrinkle come back stronger than before?
On the contrary. Because you haven’t exercised the frown muscles for a while, you may have partially lost the habit of using them. If you haven’t frowned for a while, you’ll frown less in the future. Because the area treated with Botulinum toxin has not been active for several months, the skin has had time to recover beautifully.
What is this so-called Spock effect?
The Spock effect is named after a character from a TV series from the 70’s, Star Trek. Spock sported an quizzical look, expressed by a lifted eyebrow. The Spock effect can be avoided in nearly every case by adapting the Botulinum toxin schedule for those likely to have this response. If despite an adapted schedule you are visited by the Spock effect, don’t worry: a small prick above the eyebrow will make Spock teletransport at once. So, feel free to come to the clinic for a free touch-up if you are visited by this phenomenon.
Will I get a headache if my frown is treated with Botulinum toxin?
That’s possible. As some muscles relax after treatment, other muscles may contract, possibly resulting in a tension headache. This may be avoided for the future by having your next treatment well in time. By keeping the muscles relaxed, the risk of a tension headache is reduced at the second treatment.
