Dry into summer

Many people do not know that Botox is not only the best remedy for wrinkles, but also works very well against (excessive) sweating. This is actually one of the most rewarding treatments in our practice. Especially in people who suffer a lot of sweating and therefore often feel restricted in social situations.

However, we also have many clients who come in once a year to go sweat-free into the summer. In fact, you will enjoy a treatment for about 4-6 months. A Dutch summer certainly doesn’t last any longer.

We usually treat the area under the armpits, but perspiring hands and feet are also eligible for treatment. There are about 18 punctures per armpit. Some are sensitive, others you won’t feel at all. It is nice for us if you do shave the area beforehand. If you undergo the treatment more often, the duration of the effect usually increases by several months. There are some alternatives for excessive perspiration under the armpit, but they are less effective than Botox treatment.

For example, there are anti-perspirants (super deodorant) on the market, but these have been in the news negatively for a while, as they may have an increased risk of breast cancer. Also, the aluminum present in this deodorant could be absorbed into the skin and might cause damage as a result. The National Cancer Institute in the U.S.A. speaks against the risk of breast cancer, but where there is smoke, there may be fire. Aluminum is certainly a potentially harmful substance, but whether the concentration is high enough to cause harm, the future will have to tell.

Another option is surgical removal of the sweat glands in the armpit. The result of this procedure is sometimes incomplete, and there is also a small risk of lymphedema. This means that the lymphatic drainage system is damaged in your arm and you continue to retain fluid. It is the same complication seen in the removal of lymph nodes in cancer patients. Here this is a justifiable risk, but in my opinion not too with surgery for excessive sweating.

Finally, there are certain types of drugs (beta-blockers, anti-cholinergics) that could have an ameliorating effect. However, drugs affect the entire body, resulting in side effects (dry mouth, drowsiness, constipation).

Conclusion: in my opinion, Botox anti-perspiration treatment is currently the safest and the most effective solution for excessive perspiration. Call now to make an appointment 020-4638668.

Question and Answer

Do I always have to come back for a Botox anti-perspiration treatment or is this not necessary?
Botox has a temporary effect on the sweat glands. So if you want to continue to enjoy the optimal results, you should be treated again after a few months. The more often you are treated, the longer you will enjoy the treatment, sometimes up to 12 months. Even after the Botox treatment wears off, you sweat less violently than before, especially if you have had multiple Botox anti-perspiration treatments.

Will I not sweat more than before if I stop Botox anti-perspiration treatment?
On the contrary, if you have been treated with Botox anti-perspiration a few times, you actually sweat less than before, even when you stop treatment.

Will I stop sweating at all after a Botox anti-perspiration treatment?

The concentration of Botox you were treated with and the degree of sweating before treatment determine whether you will become completely dry after a Botox anti-perspiration treatment. Most people do go completely dry for the first month after treatment.

What side effects can I expect after Botox anti-perspiration treatment?
No side effects are to be expected after Botox anti-perspiration treatment.

How long does it take to notice effects from a Botox anti-perspiration treatment?
The optimal effect is achieved between 2-14 days after treatment with Botox anti-perspiration. If you still perspire in certain areas after 2 weeks, it is advisable to make an appointment with your treating physician.

Is everyone suitable for Botox anti-perspiration treatment?
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are not suitable for Botox anti-perspiration treatment. Other possible causes for sweating should also be ruled out. For this, make an appointment with your doctor first.

Is a Botox anti-perspiration treatment covered by health insurance?
Botox anti-perspiration treatment is usually not covered by health insurance.
