Cosmetic physician Bart Biermans: “Unfortunately, you can’t make sure you’ll never be afraid of needles again, but there are some things you can do (together!) so you can at least undergo the treatment.”

During treatment, of course, it’s all about trust. “If you indicate in advance that you find needles scary, we can also schedule more time for treatment. That way you can set the pace yourself and maybe even stop in between. This way you create a safe environment and you can often cope better with your fear.”

OVERCOMING FEAR OF NEEDLES

By the way, a big needle does not mean that you will perish in pain during the treatment. “The opposite is true: the deeper you inject into the skin, the less painful the treatment is. This is because most of the nerves are in the surface of your skin.”

Basically, though, the thinner the needle is, the less painful the treatment is. “The needle used for botox is really extremely thin. It is even smaller than an insulin needle. That said, this does not mean that you will experience the treatment as completely painless. The fear is often the biggest part of the pain.”

You can also use a numbing cream to relieve ersgte nervousness before treatment. Bart. “In principle, no numbing cream is used in botox treatment, but in the case of fillers you can use Emla cream. This numbing cream contains lidocaine and prilocaine, which you can compare in effect to the anesthesia you get at the dentist. Essential with Emla, by the way, is that you give it at least 30 minutes to soak in.”

And in extreme cases, a tranquilizer tablet also offers relief. Bart: “Oxazepam. diazepam, or really anything with “pam” after it, can be used to take away the fear of needles. It is important, though, that if you are on anxiety medication that you are brought and also picked up again, because you are no longer allowed to drive a car.”

And explaining in advance what to expect during and after treatment is also important. “Just highlighting possible side effects reduces anxiety afterwards. For example, after treatment, or the day after treatment, your lips may swell if you’ve had them filled. These side effects don’t always occur, but by pointing out exactly what to expect, I also hope you’ll panic less if it does happen to you.”
