Fillers and Corona

We received frequent questions from clients over the past week about the side effects the Corona vaccine can cause with filler treatment. The Corona vaccine does not affect a Botox treatment, which is why in this piece I will continue on the combination of fillers and the Corona vaccine.

Corona vaccines in combination with Fillers

The Corona vaccine from American pharmaceutical company Moderna can cause redness and swelling in areas where fillers have recently been administered. The same goes for BioNTech/Pfizer’s Corona vaccine; this vaccine can also potentially cause swelling in areas where a filler has been injected.

The Prac reports adverse reactions to BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine

The Safety Committee (Prac) of European Medicines Agency (EMA) reports that there is “at least a reasonable possibility of a causal relationship” between BioNTech/Pfizer’s vaccine and cases of facial swelling in areas where filler treatment has recently been performed. Prac recommended that the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine product information be amended to include this side effect in the package insert. However, the benefits of BioNTech/Pfizer’s vaccine still outweigh the potential side effects, according to Prac.

FDA reports adverse reactions to Moderna vaccine

In America, where vaccination against Corona has taken off, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a number of reports from doctors who saw side effects (redness and swelling) in the areas where filler treatment had been administered after vaccination against the Corona virus in clients. Of more than 15,000 vaccinees, this side effect was observed in three patients. This reaction occurred only after vaccination with the Moderna Corona vaccine. It is worth noting here that all three clients recovered without any problems.

Common side effect

Redness and swelling with fillers is not specifically something caused only by a Corona vaccine. The immune system has become more active due to vaccination. Although hyaluronic acid is a body’s own substance, it can still be attacked by your immune system in exceptional cases. These side effects are more common after a vaccination or infection.

Opinion

Although risks are small, our advice is: If you receive a Corona vaccination from Moderna or BioNTech/Pfizer do not undergo filler treatments in the 2 weeks before and after the vaccination. This significantly reduces your chances of getting side effects.
