Cosmetic doctor Amsterdam
Since July 1, 2019, cosmetic physician KNMG has been a protected title in the Netherlands. This is a good thing, As this means that graduating doctors can now pursue certified cosmetic medicine training, but also that clients can immediately see which clinics are working with qualified medics.
Specializing in cosmetic medicine
When medical students wish to specialize in a particular field after their training – for example, to become surgeons, neurologists, or ENT doctors – they must secure a training position in a hospital. But if someone wanted to specialize as a cosmetic doctor, there was really no way to specialize in the profession until recently. The reason is quite practical: this is a relatively new field. Twenty years ago, cosmetic medical procedures were rare. But in recent years, the need for this has grown tremendously.
That is why the Dutch Cosmetic Medicine Association(NVCG) successfully pushed for Cosmetic Medicine to be recognized as a separate medical discipline. This recognition was much needed according to the NVCG president: “In recent years, it has been unclear who is a truly qualified cosmetic physician and who is not. This is a young field with low medical risk. But that does not mean that complications cannot occur. That is why it is good that there is now its own training and expertise. Cosmetic medicine is no longer something that can just be done on the side.”
Training Clinics
There are currently eight designated training clinics where cosmetic doctors can go for their specialization. The clinics are separately inspected and vetted based on quality requirements established and coordinated by the NVCG and the Royal Dutch Society for the Advancement of Medicine (KNMG). Meijer: “This is a relatively short specialization where you get theory one day a week and rotate in a clinic four days. The current curriculum covers two years. But we are now working on additional modules such as cosmetic surgery – really cutting. That’s not in the basic specialization right now.” Physicians already working in the field have until July 1, 2022, to demonstrate through a transitional arrangement that they hold the qualifications entitling them to the recognized title.
