Raise the age of cosmetic surgery from 18 to 21?

At age 18, are you competent enough to make decisions about cosmetic procedures, such as botox and fillers? Should the government protect us or are young people strong enough to make the right decisions on this. The May 2019 article on Vrouw.nl below discusses the discussion of raising the age when you should do cosmetic treatment. What is your opinion?

According to research by the Volk newspaper, it appears that cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly normal among young people. Of the 22,000 women under the age of 35, it appears that one-third can imagine one day undergoing cosmetic surgery. Previously, Boston University called the need to look like an edited version of yourself through a filter “Snapchat dysmorphia. VROUW colleague Hester Zitvast wrote an Opinion last year about botox and fillers in young people. Read it below.

“Raise the age limit for cosmetic surgery from 18 to 21 years patronizing behavior? Well no! It is hip in certain circles – where Chanel bags dangle from the arms as early as bridge class and 500 euro shoes are the most normal thing in the world – to get a botox or fill in a lip as a pastime (?). A quick after-taste with a glass of overpriced champagne, obviously pop a report on Instagram and move on.

PERMANENT
We hate being patronized in the Netherlands. Everything should just be possible and preferably at any age. The government should not interfere! I have to say that the finger wagging of Dutch politics almost always makes me itch, but a rule here and there to protect it is really no luxury.
Try to look at it objectively for a moment: botox and fillers…. it’s kind of starting to become the new perm. Do you remember that time when young people were also getting perms en masse? Oh well, if only someone had shouted at the time, “That should be banned at your age! Well that didn’t have any lasting effects on us. We walked around looking like utterly idiotic poodles for a few months, but so did all your girlfriends, so so what. But I think botox and fillers are really a step beyond.

PREVENTIVE
At the time, we saw Koen and Gigi – the Hillegersberg handbags from the TV show Don’t dick, but brush – make it to the botox clinic as an outing. No, they didn’t have wrinkles; it was purely preventive. Of course, you never know what’s coming next, and just the idea of a groove in the face is enough to cause half a depression.
And therein lies the crux of this story. Because why do you want botox? Do you want it because it is the most normal thing in your environment? Are you insecure about your appearance? Or do you have a deep-seated fear of growing old?

FILLER
Because in all those cases, I think a visit to a psychologist does more good. After all, you don’t have wrinkles when you’re 18. And in the three years between the ages of 18 and 21, you may have become just a little stronger in your shoes, recognizing that you really don’t need to have yourself tinkered with (yet).
Boundaries blur easily. After a visit to the botox doctor, a filler in your lip is the next step. And while you’re at it, in a few years, a mini-facelift too; you’re in the system with your data now anyway.

BABYBOTOX
Of course, most cosmetic doctors disagree with me. They advocate that they really don’t spray young adults who don’t need it. But in the meantime, anyone who is a basic doctor can do side work (at home) in this way, as long as they keep the stuff cool in the refrigerator.
You’ll have to pay the house and dentists who earn their fifth vacation in this way in the evening hours; most of them really don’t care about a wrinkle-free 18-year-old more or less – they’ll give them a “baby botox” without blinking an eye.

VERBOD
So ban it, until 21 years of age. It’s also not like banning someone like that takes the fun out of life, is it? You don’t deprive someone of the ability to drive, for example. No, you won’t be allowed to inject poison into your head for three more years, boo-hoo.
Such an increase in the age limit seems like an excellent move and may be implemented immediately as far as I am concerned. Let’s be more accepting that aging is an unavoidable (pre-)part of life. And you better realize that in time.”
