Are you considering lip fillers?

The lip filler trend of recent years probably hasn’t escaped your notice. Whereas at first only famous stars walked around with plumped lips, nowadays you see more and more people turning to lip augmentation. At The Body Clinic, we have performed the lip filler treatment thousands of times, have given lots of advice and now know which technique is right for the desired result. What we notice is that clients do not always know what they are getting into before treatment. With the knowledge we have gained over the past 15 years, we want to inform you through this blog so you can make an informed decision if you are considering lip fillers.

Lip filler trend

More and more people want full, sensual and symmetrical lips. This trend has made lip fillers one of the most popular treatments in the cosmetic industry. The high demand for lip fillers is causing more and more supply. Unfortunately, the selection is quite diverse in quality. More and more people come to our clinic who have not had a good experience with lip fillers and now want it done properly and professionally. Below you can read the most important do’s and don’ts for beautiful natural fuller lips.

Do’s of lip fillers

  • Make sure the right filler is injected
It there very important that you take good time to learn a lot about the different types of fillers. This is because not all fillers are legal and therefore you have a chance of poor quality lip filler being used. This can cause complications. At The Body Clinic, we use a hyaluronic acid filler. This is a temporary filler that is very similar to the hyaluronic acid made in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid fillers are therefore safe and may also be dissolved using “hyaluronidase,” this makes the treatment extra safe. At The Body Clinic, we use the Restylane and Saypha brands. These are A-brand hyaluronic acid fillers and have been used for a long time. Tens of millions of treatments have since been performed with it. So these have been shown to be safe fillers which makes the risk of complications very small.
  • See an experienced doctor
In addition to using safe fillers, it is also very important to go to an experienced doctor in the field of Botox and fillers. Fillers should only be administered by doctors. If you want to know if a cosmetic doctor is suitable for lip filler treatment, we recommend researching that doctor. You do this by reading reviews of the doctor and the clinic where the doctor works. This can be done at www.Kliniekervaringen.nl or through Google Reviews, for example. Also, the doctor must be BIG registered, you can find this in the BIG register. Having a good feeling with the doctor is also important. Therefore, it is good to first consult with the attending physician. At The Body Clinic, you always have the consultation, treatment and after checkup with the same doctor. Also, a consultation is free!
  • Make an informed choice
It is important that you make the choice about your own face. Think in advance about how you want your lips to look after the filler treatment. Are you going for a natural result, that is, some youthful and fuller lips, or do you not mind seeing that you have had the treatment done? All of this is your choice. It is important that the doctor understands your choice and envisions the same thing. If you haven’t figured out exactly what you want done to the shape or quantity of your lips, get advice from an experienced doctor. They see what looks beautiful in relation to your face. Several scientific studies have shown that lips are at their most beautiful when the upper to lower lip ratio is as follows: 1.0 : 1.6 to 2.0. This means that the lower lip should be about 1.6 to 2 times larger than the upper lip (Mandy, 2007, Sarnhoff & Gotkin, 2021).
  • Build up the quantity slowly
Are you going to have treatment with lip fillers for the first time? Then keep in mind the number of quantity you have inserted. It’s hard to estimate the end result even then, you might be shocked by too big lips. Therefore, it is wise to start slowly with small amounts. This allows you to properly determine how you want the shape and volume of your lips. You can add some extra after that, if necessary. The doctors at The Body Clinic will always provide expert advice during the consultation on what best suits your face shape and contours.

Don’ts of lip fillers

  • Don’t go injecting it yourself
Nowadays, we see many people who start experimenting with filling their lips with fillers bought on the Internet. These are fillers that are not approved and are not guaranteed to be safe. Please don’t do this, this is hugely dangerous! In the Netherlands, you need the proper training and experience to be allowed to apply injectables, as many blood vessels and veins run in your face. The fillers that doctors inject are extensively tested for complications and side effects and are labeled. One risk of self-injecting lip fillers is thick, hard bumps and discoloration of the lips. There is also a chance of “vascular occlusion. This means that a filler enters a blood vessel and becomes blocked. When this happens, the tissue dies. There are also many risks involved in using a “hyaluronic pen. With a hyaluronic pen, the filler is shot through the skin by high pressure. This can clog your blood vessels and disfigure your face. Enough reason to never inject lip fillers yourself. “Watch out. Making yourself more beautiful can turn ugly. A successful procedure starts with a good doctor.”
  • Beware of permanent fillers
If you like your lip fillers and want to keep the results, you should come back once every 9-12 months for recurrence. Permanent fillers stay in your skin for the rest of your life because your body cannot clear the filler. Permanent fillers consist of unnatural materials that can cause inflammation and abscesses to develop. Also, the filler may roam in your body. For these reasons, permanent fillers have been banned in the Netherlands by the Health Care Inspectorate. So our advice is to never have permanent filler injected, but instead have temporary hyaluronic acid fillers that are safe and dissolvable injected by a doctor.
  • Not having an extremely cheap filler treatment performed
Always be critical when you see extremely low prices for lip filler passing by on the Internet. On average, a lip filler treatment costs between €300 and €600 (1ml). These prices are based on the materials, the doctor and the treatment itself. So it is very suspicious when a lip filler treatment is offered somewhere for a much lower rate. These may then be fillers that are not certified in the Netherlands. You don’t know if the fillers are safe and what complications you may face. Cheap is often expensive!
