What is the difference between fillers and botox?

Fillers and botox are often confused with each other. They may both be injected in a cosmetic clinic, but they are two completely different products with different effects. While Botulinum toxin (botox) temporarily relaxes muscles, causing wrinkles, lines and frowns to go away, a filler actually temporarily fills in a furrow, crease or wrinkle.

What are fillers?

In this blog, we take a closer look at fillers. As mentioned, fillers fill something up, but the question now is what agent is being used to fill something up? Permanent fillers used to be used as well as silicone. For example, these fillers filled a wrinkle or gave volume to a particular area. However, permanent fillers cannot be corrected and therefore cannot be dissolved. Nor were the long-term effects known at that time. Unfortunately, many complications arose from permanent fillers such as inflammation, foreign body reactions resulting in, for example, deformed faces. Today, therefore, permanent fillers are banned in the Netherlands.

What is hyaluronic acid

Nowadays, temporary fillers are used. These fillers are hyaluronic acid-based, a translucent body gel. At The Body Clinic, we only work with A-brands of hyaluronic acid, such as Restylane, Teosyal or Saypha. Tens of millions of treatments have already been performed with these hyaluronic acids and their long-term safety has also been proven. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body itself that has a hydrating and collagen boosting effect on the skin. With natural aging, the amount of hyaluronic acid and thus the volume of the skin decreases. How quickly this occurs depends on lifestyle, wear and tear and heredity, among other factors.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be used when one wants to have wrinkles filled. A wrinkle that has become deep over time can be properly filled with fillers. The fine wrinkles around your mouth are also easy to treat. A popular treatment with fillers is also puffiness under the eyes. Actually, almost all wrinkles on your face are suitable for treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers. After a consultation with you, the doctor will decide which brand is best for you to achieve the desired results. In fact, each brand has unique characteristics that make it best used in a particular area.

What areas can you use a filler for?

In addition to filling wrinkles, a hyaluronic acid-based filler is also suitable for contour repair and enhancement. Due to the natural aging process we all face, fat reserves and facial support tissue decrease. This results in volume loss. In your younger years, you may have had fuller and firmer cheeks. The temples may also fall in a bit, making your forehead appear narrower. By contouring at the top of the face, you restore the V-shape in the face, which exudes youthfulness. There are, of course, other areas that can be considered for contour repair, think cheekbones, nasolabial fold, corners of the mouth and jawline.

Lip fillers and rhinoplasty

You are not only eligible for fillers in old age. Younger people sometimes want more volume in certain areas of the face. For example, if you desire fuller lips than the ones you were born with, lip fillers are the answer. Less well known is that fillers are also suitable for what is known as “liquid” rhinoplasty. Suppose you have a lump on your nose it can be remedied with a filler. You do not then need to undergo a surgical procedure. You don’t need months of recovery time and the results are immediate.

Consultation filler treatment

Prior to a filler treatment, photographs will be taken of you. Then the area to be treated is numbed with a cream. The doctor at The Body Clinic will work with you to discuss your needs and analyze your options to achieve the desired results. What you have in mind is not always possible or is not always the best solution. Therefore, it is very important that you always have a consultation with one of our experienced doctors prior to treatment.

For a filler treatment

Before the filler treatment, we recommend taking 1x 10mg of Cetrizine against swelling. To prevent bruising, we recommend taking Arnica drops from 5 days before to two days after the treatment. If you are taking dietary supplements, vitamins and/or fish oil, we recommend that you stop taking these 5 days before the treatment. Alcohol has no positive influence on treatment, so it is important not to consume alcohol from 48 hours before treatment. Finally, we recommend that you do not use blood-thinning medications such as Asperine, Naproxen and Ibuprofen for treatment ( paracetamol is allowed). If necessary, you should consult with the prescribing physician.

After treatment with fillers

After treatment, the affected area may be somewhat swollen, red and/or blue. In our clinic, you can start cooling right away. We recommend keeping this up for 10-30 minutes. We do not recommend exercising after treatment, or applying makeup. Avoid contact with injected skin and avoid solar radiation on the treated area. Use at least SPF 30. We also recommend that you avoid using a tanning bed and avoid facial treatments such as peels, lasers and microdermabrasion for at least two weeks. Give your skin time to recover. Two weeks after treatment, you will return for a checkup. Should you be completely satisfied this is not necessary. Should you have any doubts about the result, you are of course welcome to discuss it with our doctor.

Results of filler treatment

The results of hyaluronic acid-based fillers last about 12 months. After two weeks, the final result is visible. It depends on the person how long a filler actually lasts. Some people break down hyaluronic acid faster than others. Therefore, it is difficult to say exactly how long a filler will maintain the desired results.

Safety fillers

Should you not be satisfied with the results, it is good to know that the fillers we use at The Body Clinic are dissolvable and temporary. We absolutely do not use permanent fillers at our clinic in Amsterdam and Duiven.
